On Monday 26^th September, Swedish seismologists detected underwater explosions in the southern part of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Poland. This is the part of the Baltic Sea that both the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines go through on their way to Germany. Shortly after the explosions, patches of the sea were being disturbed by escaping gas. As a result of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Nord Stream 2 was never opened by Germany who were going to be the recipients of the gas. Nord Stream 1 had been closed by the Russians for maintenance which has not happened.

It looks as though the damage to the pipes means they will probably never re-open. That’s putting even more pressure on Europe to find alternative supplies of gas. The price of gas soared after news of the attack on the pipelines became known. This is coming in on top of already crippling energy prices for consumers. Basically, it’s a clusterf**k, a potentially epic one as we head into the winter.

At the time of writing, it’s not certain who was responsible for attacking the pipelines. There’s a lot of posturing from politicians across Europe going on this in spite of this because, that’s what politicians do. There’s a lot of geopolitical maneuvering going on in what has been described as a game of three dimensional chess taking place in an active tumble dryer! Suffice to say it will be us plebs who’ll be suffering the consequences of this:(
